Halloween is about scaring people and being scared for fun; and it is not just for kids.
In fact, Americans will spend more money on adult costumes this season than on costumes for kids according to the National Retail Federation.
Americans will spend $2.6 billion on Halloween costumes this season, according to data recently released by the National Retail Federation. While that's down slightly from last year, they’ll still shell out $1 billion for children’s costumes, $1.2 billion for adult costumes and $330 million on pet costumes.
Now, let’s talk about what should scare you in your business … and it is the lack of a compelling message.
Billions of dollars are poured through various promotion, advertising, and marketing channels every month. These include ad agencies, social media agencies, print, broadcast and online media, exhibits, and more. Most of it is essentially saying nothing.
All of this clutter is just plain numbing.
Contract this with the cute little green GEICO gecko. They have a message that they hammer home: 15 minutes can save you 15%.
Increasingly, more and more consumers are circumventing advertising precisely because advertisers have made themselves so annoying and irrelevant.
If you have nothing to say, I suggest you stop saying it.
If you can’t differentiate, your business deserves to die.
If you lack a compelling message, you are easy to ignore … and that should scare you more than any ghostly apparition ever could.
